Medical Study Abroad: Evidence to Request About Clinical Placements
Questions for verifying clinical training arrangements, supervision, student access and academic records before entering a foreign medical programme.

A hospital photograph is not evidence of your clinical placement. Before choosing a medical programme abroad, ask for the actual training structure, supervision and documentation for your cohort. This guide helps you frame due-diligence questions; it does not certify that a university or placement meets any regulator's requirements.
Request the cohort's clinical schedule
Ask when clinical learning begins, which subjects and settings are included, and how the schedule connects with the rest of the course. Keep the exact programme and intake in the enquiry. Distinguish a general list of affiliated hospitals from the sites actually used by students on your route. Ask who allocates placements and what happens if a site is unavailable. An institution may have a genuine hospital relationship without guaranteeing the same experience for every student. Your decision needs evidence about the learning you will undertake, not only the facilities located nearby.
Clarify what students are permitted to do
Ask how observation, supervised participation, practical teaching and assessment are distinguished. Students should not assume they can perform activities beyond their training or authorised role. Investigate how consent, confidentiality and patient safety are taught. Ask whether language requirements affect access to clinical learning and how students are prepared. A vague promise of hands-on exposure needs explanation in educational terms: what is taught, under whose supervision and how competence is assessed? Obtain the university's description rather than relying on a promotional video or an isolated student's personal account.
Investigate supervision and feedback
Identify who is responsible for clinical teaching and how students receive feedback. Ask about allocation to teaching groups, access to supervisors and the process when an expected learning opportunity is missed. Do not judge quality solely by hospital size or a large patient count; those figures do not establish what each student learns. Read whether practical assessments test understanding and safe behaviour as well as attendance. The purpose is to understand the educational arrangement, not to compare institutions through unsupported numerical claims about exposure or guaranteed procedural experience.
Ask how training becomes verifiable evidence
Find out which official academic records show subjects, dates, clinical postings and practical training. NMC's June 2026 guidance, in its specified disrupted-training context, emphasises documentary verification rather than treating one certificate as conclusive. Use that as a prompt to ask how ordinary course records are maintained. Clarify who issues them, how errors are corrected and whether students can obtain authenticated copies. Keep records during study instead of trying to reconstruct several years at graduation. Do not assume that a general completion letter will answer every future verification question.
Check the arrangement against the applicable framework
Read the relevant regulatory requirements for the intended registration pathway and compare them with the programme evidence. Training location, continuity and structure can matter, so a promise to arrange something elsewhere later should receive careful scrutiny. If your case involves interruption, transfer or online learning, seek appropriate case-specific guidance. Vidhyarthi Mithram can help organise questions and documents, but a placement brochure is not a registration guarantee. Resolve essential uncertainties before paying, and recheck arrangements if the university changes a site, schedule or delivery model after you receive an offer.
Your next-step checklist
- Request the actual cohort schedule.
- Identify allocated training sites.
- Clarify permitted student participation.
- Check supervision and assessment.
- Ask how postings and dates are officially recorded.
Questions students ask
Does a hospital affiliation guarantee my placement?
Not necessarily. Ask which site and learning arrangements apply to your programme and cohort, and obtain official confirmation of allocation and alternatives.
Can a clinical-training certificate settle every recognition question?
Do not assume so. Authorities may examine several records and the applicable rules. Preserve detailed, authentic academic and training evidence throughout the course.
