The useful starting point

Start funding research alongside your course shortlist. Match each opportunity to your nationality, study level, subject and intake, then compare the confirmed award with your full-course costs. A scholarship application is not confirmed funding.

This is a funding-planning guide, not a live list of open awards, a loan offer or personalised financial advice. Providers and lenders decide eligibility, selection and terms; no scholarship or loan is guaranteed.

Understand the essentials

Understand the funding mix.

Different sources cover different costs. Keep the award, the repayment obligation and the remaining shortfall separate.

01

University awards

Check the official funding pages for each university and course. Establish whether an award is automatic, requires a separate application or depends on an offer.

  • Eligible programme and nationality
  • Tuition discount or wider support
  • Renewal and award conditions
02

Government & external scholarships

Use the awarding organisation’s own call for applications. A well-known scholarship name does not mean that every applicant, subject or study level is eligible.

  • Current call and application route
  • Selection criteria and references
  • Obligations attached to the award
03

Research funding

For a research degree, ask the department about advertised funded positions, project eligibility, supervision and the distinction between a fee waiver and living support.

  • Position or scholarship conditions
  • Research proposal and supervisor fit
  • Funding duration and uncovered costs
04

Savings & education loans

Compare a confirmed personal contribution with any borrowing required. Ask the lender for the full written terms and a repayment illustration, not just a headline rate.

  • Co-applicant and security requirements
  • Interest, charges and repayment start
  • Sanction, disbursement and currency timing

Official information, not assumptions

Begin with official funding sources.

These are research entry points, not promises of availability. Open the provider’s current call, confirm your eligibility and record the deadline before applying.

A practical sequence

Build a budget that still works without an award.

Use written university fee information and your own living-cost research. Keep estimates labelled, note the currency and leave room for uncertainty.

  1. 01

    List the full-course costs

Include tuition for all years, possible annual increases, housing and deposits, food, insurance, local transport, travel, visa costs and course-specific expenses.

  2. 02

    Separate confirmed from hoped-for funding

Record available savings, an accepted scholarship award and a lender’s actual sanction separately from applications, estimates and possible future earnings.

  3. 03

Ask the lender the right questions

Discuss eligibility, co-applicant documents, collateral, interest during study, all charges, repayment schedule, early repayment and the conditions for releasing funds. Seek qualified advice about the agreement.

  4. 04

Plan payment dates and a contingency

Map deposits, tuition instalments and living expenses against when funds become available. Check refund terms and exchange-rate exposure before committing. Do not depend on unconfirmed part-time work.

Ask about your situation
01How can Indian students find study abroad scholarships?

Start with the official funding pages of your shortlisted universities and the relevant scholarship providers. Filter by nationality, qualification, subject and intake. Save the current eligibility criteria and deadline, and confirm whether you need a separate scholarship application. The provider links on this page are research starting points, not a list of awards currently open to everyone.

02Can a scholarship cover all my study abroad costs?

Some awards offer broader support than others, but you must read the actual award terms. Compare tuition support, living contributions, travel, insurance and the funded duration against your own full-course budget. Do not describe an award as covering everything unless the written terms support that conclusion, and keep a plan for uncovered expenses.

03When should I apply for a scholarship?

Research funding while you shortlist courses, rather than waiting until departure. Deadlines and the relationship to admission vary by scheme. Use the current provider call and the relevant time zone; an application window for one university or scholarship is not a universal deadline.

04Does DAAD fund every undergraduate course in Germany?

No blanket funding entitlement should be assumed. DAAD describes its scholarships as primarily aimed at graduates, doctoral students and postdocs. Check the specific programme in its scholarship database and confirm whether your nationality, academic stage and course are eligible.

05Can Vidhyarthi Mithram guarantee a scholarship or education loan?

No. Scholarship providers and lenders make their own decisions. Our team can help organise your research, questions, document preparation and timelines, but an enquiry, counselling session or application is not an award or loan sanction. Ask the provider or lender for written confirmation before relying on funding.

06What should I compare before taking an education loan?

Compare the complete written terms: borrowing and repayment currency, interest type, charges, co-applicant and security requirements, interest during study, repayment start, instalments and disbursement conditions. Ask for a repayment illustration and clarification of any condition you do not understand. This website does not recommend a lender or assess whether borrowing is affordable for you.
